2016 Living the Dream: Commercial and Small Farm Aquaponics Master Class With Murray Hallam- 4-Day Agenda

Join us for an exciting master class  with legendary aquaponic expert, Murray Hallam.  This special event will involve connecting with other industry leaders on commercial and small farm aquaponic applications while sharing knowledge.  This 4-day event is designed to show you how this emerging green industry is prime for playing a big role in the local food movement.  Below is a tentative schedule for what we plan to cover during this event.

DAY 1 – Sunday, October 2nd, 2016  – 8:45 AM to 4 PM

8:45 AM – 9:00 AM – Registration.

9:00 AM – 9:45 AM –  Welcoming and Introductions.  

9:45 AM – 10:00 AM – Overview of the 4-Day Training Program

10 AM – 10:15 AM – Break

10:15 AM – 12:o0 PM – Greenhouse Tour – . Attendees will explore the the major components of an aquaponic system.  This session will discuss the build plan for the 4-Day workshop event.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Lunch

1:00 PM – 3:3o PM – Commercial Aquaponics as an Emerging Green Industry.  This afternoon session is designed to give attendees insight into the emerging commercial aquaponic industry and how it is becoming a sustainable solution in the local food and medicine movement.  Here we will meet with real industry experts to learn how they have developed scalable solutions that generate various revenue streams while creating new green jobs and sustainable solutions while preserving natural resources.  Attendees will walk away with valuable connections, real case studies, tools and strategies to develop sound business plans to develop commercial aquaponic ventures. (Break will happen during session.)

DAY 2 – Monday, October 3rd, 2016 : 9 AM to 4 PM

9:00 AM – 9:15 AM – Opening

9:15 AM – 10:30 AM – Greenhouse  – Here attendees will focus on building wicking beds and explore system design around water flow, header tanks and filtration.

10:30 AM – 10:45 AM – Break

10:45 AM – 12:00 PM – Greenhouse Learning Session 

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Lunch

1:00 PM – 3:45 PM – Aquaponics: Designing for Purpose and Profit.  Building off of Day One’s Commercial Aquaponics as an Emerging Green Industry session, we’ll explore the different types of aquaponic systems are and how they perform on larger scales.  Here we will discuss cutting edge technologies and how they are being incorporated into rural and urban designs.  Attendees will walk away with various 3-D aquaponic examples and designs (as found in the student materials) to consider for their purpose and venture and understand how to these designs impact the profit margin. (Break will happen during session.)

DAY 3 – Tuesday, October 4th, 2016: 9 AM to 4 PM

9:00 AM – 9:15 AM – Opening

9:15 AM – 10:30 AM –Greenhouse Learning Session  –  Here attendees will build the media and raft bed system components.  Set up of fish, sump and mineralization tanks will also be explored.  We’ll explore what the common fail points are and how to troubleshoot issues to ensure that the system functions properly to support a balanced ecosystem.

10:45 AM – 12:00 PM – Greenhouse Build – INDY23 System Build Continued.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Lunch

1:00 PM – 3:45 PM – Aquaponics as a Brand and a Community Builder.  Aquaponics grows more than just organic produce and fish.  In this exciting session, we’ll explore how aquaponics is serving as a vehicle to connect and develop community knowledge while building the local food and medicine movement.  We’ll showcase how the emerging benefit company and B-Corp movement is rapidly adopting the emerging aquaponic industry and how it is being leveraged to develop local supply chains and new educational models.  Attendees will be able to explore how to leverage these new ideas and solutions to better develop branding strategies around their aquaponic businesses and ventures. (Break will happen during session.)

5:30 PM – Optional Community Dinner with Murray Hallam and the Ingenuers.  

DAY 4 – Wednesdat, October 5th, 2016 – 9 AM to 4 PM

9:00 AM – 9:15 AM – Opening

9:15 AM – 10:30 AM – Greenhouse Build – Here attendees will focus on assembling the plumbing for the entire aquaponics system.  We’ll explore common and potential fail points and examine what kind of pump works best in regards to energy usage and efficiency.

10:30 AM – 10:45 AM – Break

10:45 AM – 12:00 PM – Greenhouse Build – INDY23 System Build Continued.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Lunch

1:00 PM – 3:45 PM – Aquaponics Business Planning.  There are many different aspects to consider when planning to build, develop and launch an aquaponic venture.  This session is designed to give attendees the basic business planning tools to define and map out the scope and purpose of their aquaponic venture and develop strategies to address areas in funding, marketing, securing customers, growth and infrastructure development, staffing and regulatory compliance. (Break will happen during session.)
